Past Postgraduate Conferences
The 2023 SST postgraduate conference on the theme of Hope was held at New College, University of Edinburgh on 4-6 September 2023. It included plenaries from Dr James Eglinton, Dr Katherine Hockey, and Dr Selina Stone, alongside paper presentations from PG students in various discipline related to theology. The conference opened with a public forum, featuring Rt Revd John Armes, Bishop of Edinburgh, Dr Anupama Ranawana, and Prof Rachel Muers, Chair of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, who gave a welcome address. A panel discussion closed the conference. Ruby R. Alemu and Elilo Ezung organized the conference.
The 2021 SST postgraduate conference on Reconciliation was held at Newnham College, Cambridge on 13-15 September 2021 (postponed from 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic). It foregrounded reconciliation as a generative site of doctrinal, ecumenical, biblical, and practical reflection and encounter. The keynote speakers were Prof Janet Soskice, Prof Christoph Schwöbel, and Prof Tom Greggs, and the conference included a public forum of theologians and practitioners on the theme of Reconciliation, featuring Prof Anthony Reddie and Canon Sarah Snyder. The organizing committee included Niamh Colbrook, Austin Stevenson, Thomas Graff, Martin Phillips, and Alexander Garton.
2019 University of Birmingham
The 2017 SST postgraduate conference, Faith in the Academy: Theology Among the Disciplines, was held at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium, on 28-30 August. The plenary speakers were Dr Prof Barbara Baert, Dr Prof Lieven Boeve, Prof Anne Vandenhoeck, Dr Prof Stephan van Erp, Prof Karen Kilby, and Prof Jean-Luc Marion. The organizing committee included Derrick Witherington and Daniel Minch.
On 9-10 January 2015 the fourth SST Postgraduate Conference took place at the University of Manchester on the theme Images, Icons and Idols. Approximately 75 postgraduates attended, including from Ireland, the Netherlands, Ukraine and the United States, to explore issues in theological anthropology and religions and the arts. Keynote lectures were given by Prof David Brown (St Andrews) and Dr Alistair McFadyen (Leeds) and there were 31 student presentations. Attendance (excluding accommodation and dinner) was free and the conference was generously funded by contributions from the Lincoln Theological Institute, ArtsMethods Manchester and SCM Press, with support from Manchester Museum. Participants had the opportunity to take part in specialist workshops at the Manchester Museum. The conference was organized by a committee of four people: Naomi Billingsley, Rosie Edgley, Scott Midson and Charlie Pemberton.
The 2014 SST postgraduate conference was entitled Bodies: Bridges and Boundaries and took place on 6-7 January at St John’s College, University of Oxford and Ertegun House, Oxford from 6–7 January. 100 postgraduates attended, 43 papers presented, and £750 of support was given by SST. The organizers had gained further funding from the Ertegun Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities and the Faculty of Theology and Religion, University of Oxford. The organizers were Alexandria (Lexi) Eikelboom, Tobias Tan, Samuel Shearn, Ulrich Schmiedel, and James Matarrazzo.
The 2012 SST postgraduate conference took the theme How Shall the Next Generation Live? Theology as Responsibility. It was held at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Divinity on 3-4 December. Participants were welcomed by Prof Judith Lieu, and plenary sessions were given by Prof Graham Ward, Prof George Newlands, Dr Susannah Ticciati, Revd Dr Stephen Plant and Revd Dr Gregory Seach. The conference organizers were Nicki Wilkes and Ruth Jackson.
