About us

The Society for the Study of Theology exists to promote excellence in the study of Christian Theology by facilitating and shaping theological thought, conversation and community.

In particular, the Society’s object is to identify and discuss important themes, questions and dialogues which call for theological engagement; and to explore the nature of and foster theological integrity, responsibility and vocation in academy, church and other areas of public life.

The annual conference is for anyone with graduate-level interest in theology. We are able to offer numerous opportunities for presenters to give either a short paper or a seminar paper and mentoring support is available for those submitting proposals for the first time or after a long break.

The Society for the Study of Theology is proud to host a rich variety of approaches to theology. Our plenary speakers, all the contributors of short papers and seminar papers, and the many people who contribute to our formal and informal conversations, speak from a wide variety of theological disciplines and approaches, and from a wide variety of contexts and backgrounds. We include people who work in systematic theology and practical theology, political theology and pastoral theology, liberation theology and philosophical theology; people who pursue theology in relation to a wide variety of Christian traditions, from Quaker to Orthodox, Pentecostal to Puritan; we include people who work on Black, feminist, queer, trans, and disability theologies; we include people who work in the overlaps, entanglements and intersections of all these strands – and many, many others. We all benefit from that diversity and from the serious and generous exchange between these voices. We are working to increase that diversity, and to break down barriers that impede it.
