Society for the Study of Theology

Bursary fund applications—CLOSED

The Society is committed to making the conference as accessible as possible, and we have a generous bursary fund which can provide help with conference fees and accommodation costs, and sometimes travel costs. Contributions to the fund can be made when booking.

Applications for financial support from the Society are welcomed from prospective conference participants liable to pay the conference fee and board from their own funds. Applicants are expected to have sought support from other sources first, wherever possible. In particular, postgraduates are expected to have made a representation to their granting body and their department; ministers to their training fund; academic staff to their departments. In the likely event of applications exceeding the value of bursaries and grants available, weight will be given to the contribution of the applicant to the conference or the life of the Society, the proximity of the conference topic to previous or current research, financial means and distance of travel. The assistance available with travel costs is limited, and owing to financial constraints, contributions to transatlantic or other long-haul travel can only be made in very exceptional circumstances.

The call for bursary applications is made in December and the deadline for receipt is 18 FEBRUARY. To apply, please e-mail the Secretary with the following information:

1. Name

2. Occupation and/or institution

3. Current research and/or research relevant to the conference theme.

4. If you are applying for a fees/accommodation bursary, the sum requested.

5. If you are applying for a travel grant, the sum requested and place of departure.

6. If you are applying for a travel grant, your bank account sort code and number.

7. Details of any other funding sources to which you have applied and the outcome (if known).

8. Whether you offering a short paper or seminar paper, and if a seminar paper, which seminar.

The Secretary will notify you by e-mail (to the address from which you applied) of the outcome of your bursary application by 24 FEBRUARY. This is in order to give you time to book and pay before the early booking rate deadline if your attendance at the conference depends on a bursary being available. If you are applying for a bursary, please do not complete your booking until you know the outcome of your application. This is because bursaries will be e-mailed as a credit note, which holders will be able to use to complete their online booking.

If the Society offers a travel grant, this will be paid by reimbursement via BACS following the conference after receipts have been provided. It will not be possible to pay travel costs in advance.
